There is a lot of confusion out there about what is considered normal or ideal for the return of fertility after giving birth. Many women experience changes in their cycles after giving birth and aren’t sure where to turn for help or if they even need help in the first place.

Let’s start by honoring that there is a wide variety of normal as to when signs of fertility return after having a baby. Although, I’ll also note that women who choose to not breastfeed or pump at all (or are unable to) or those experiencing a loss should see signs of ovulation within 6-8 weeks after giving birth.

Besides the fact that I obviously have a vested personal interest in this topic, it’s also something that women ask me about often or it comes up during a mapping session after having a baby. While this post is geared towards vaginal birth, there is also something here for cesarean birth mamas. It’s often pregnancy itself that causes internal shifts and changes in pelvic health and genital configuration. So even if a baby didn’t pass through the vaginal canal, there is still great benefit to be had in implementing some of these practices. Let’s get started…

As I traverse my own journey in preparing for birth, I have a few things that I would like to share. This particular post was inspired by a recent exchange I had in a FB group for home birth minded people. While I won’t go into the details of the FB thread, I will say that it inspired me to provide some education around pelvic floor health in relationship to preparing for vaginal birth while minimizing trauma to the pelvic floor.
